I hadn't expected Maine to hold as much beauty in the winter.
But, I should have known better.
Many a time in the fall, we have sat on these benches in the harbor
and it still holds much beauty here in December.
Of course you knew I would have to throw in some birds. I have to work a little bit harder here to get bird photos. No shooting through my office window here. Lazy girl as I am!
Caught this guy parking himself to take a little snooze. Guess this time of the year, he can linger as long as he wants. All the crowds have departed.
On our way home, the sun was beginning to set ... at 4:00!! This is just
WRONG ... WRONG ... WRONG ...
and the one thing about winter that disturbs my soul!
I didn't notice the Christmas balls hanging in the tree until I downloaded the photo.
Pretty cool!
The Professor was very patient with me as I was trying to capture different angles of the sun as we drove. He would back up until I got just the right angle. All these sunsets were taken through the windshield of the car ... guess it served as a natural filter! Which, by the way, I don't own nor would I even know how to use it if I did. I guess I need to study up on that. Do any of you use a filter? If so, why and when?
I think Bern Williams had it right when he said,
It is almost impossible to watch a sunset
and not dream.
Still dreaming up here in Maine.

Awesome captures and what gorgeous skies! Amazing sunset! What a way to end a day! Wow! Love the birds and your second shot of the harbor! What a wonderful place! I'm really happy for you! Hope you and the professor have a great weekend!!

so jealous ... the hubby & i loved maine. what a beautiful state. enjoy!! gorgeous photos ... i agree with that statement totally... wow, i dream all the time & even when i view a sunset too. wow!! (:
Lovely colors! But, yes, it gets dark an hour earlier than in Mich.
so lovely! yay to the stop and start driving professor! :)
love your gulls. yeah, i'd miss shooting from my office window too!
i use a UV filter on my lenses but that's all.
Great shots as usual. I loved your comment about "where is Target?" After moving from Phoenix to rural Texas a year ago I am still going through Target withdrawal. I felt for sure last week when I traveled about 80 miles to a town of almost 200,000 I would find a Super Target. No such luck. My choices are either Houston or Dallas, both 150 miles away.
I only use a UV filter also, mainly because it is stuck on my lens and I can't get it off! I used to alternate it between two lenses. Now I just need to buy a new one for the lens that doesn't have one! I feel a little more comfortable throwing my camera around in my vehicle with that lens as some sort of protection against scratching.
I absolutely adore every single one of these photos. The colors are gorgeous!
I expected Maine to be all white by this time of year - that would be beautiful, but these are just gorgeous. I haven't used a filter but thought about it myself tonight when I watched a Florida sunset.
They are all beautiful.
The two sea gulls with their "mouths" open screaming at you remind me of when my wife and I were sitting on the dock in Oslo eating shrimp bought directly from the shrimp boat. In normal shrimp are cooked in sea water on the way in to port.
Such beauty there, too.
Beautiful shots.

Your sunset is gorgeous!!!!! I have never had a filter and wouldn't know what to do with it if I did. YES, it is wrong to get dark in the middle of the day, I HATE it!! I have to say my favorite picture is the two birds squawking in unison!! Or maybe they were singing a Christmas carol!!
I'd be dreaming there too. I do use a filter, and I do change it when it's sunny outside...that is IF I remember :)
these photos are smashing! love those birds, and you've chosen a gorgeous spot there. happy weekend to you Reena.
Nice shots. We also go out on photograhic jaunts to get away from the the usual tedium of life's chores.
I also like photographing gulls. They are so often over lokked, because they are so common, but they are such characters.

I hope this doesn't mean that you've abandoned us down here in the sunny South!! What a lovely place. Only been to Maine once but it was gorgeous and I'd certainly like to return one day. Alas, may not happen.
Wonderful glimpses of Maine! It looks warm there -- where is the snow? Your sunset is gorgeous.
Gorgeous shots. You must be so thrilled to be there. I only use a clear UV filter on each of my lenses - mostly to protect them from impacts.
Beautiful Photos!
Where's the one of Walmart? :-)
Have a great weekend.
what a beautiful place, it's very relaxing and refreshing with the blue views. :)

Hi Renna..pretty much a different world isn't it ...It sounds like Target will be a day trip for sure..lol!!
Absolutely gorgeous photo's, lovely colors and I love the Gull on the parking sign ...cute!!
Some cold days in the forecast...we have been spoiled here this year!
Grace
Such gorgeous photos...those colors in the sunset are amazing. I can't get over how warm this winter has been...well I suppose it's really still fall...but for this time of year...it's pretty toasty!
I live on the other coast, in Santa Barbara. I so love these photos, they are very different than what I see here, but also very similar to what I see here. Happy Friday :)
A wonderful series of shot. Beautiful!
These are such gorgeous shots. I have to say I have a thing for those bird shots.. Toooo cute..
Hugs, Linda
Beautiful pics! The first one and the one with the 2 birds are my favorite! Have a great weekend!
Reena, Could the sunset be any more beautiful!!!! Just awesome captures. Maine does look like a lovely place to be. Have a lovely weekend. Mickie :)
Reena, these are all beautiful and I'm glad you have your Professor as well trained as my old Prof. is. Maine is a wonderful State to live in, I am sure you will enjoy it immensely. The coast is superb and so are the birds before the winter sets in. Never mind about it getting dark at 4 p.m., get is a good stock of pillar candles, with a few scented ones. Light them as the light starts fading and blow them out when you go to bed. They set a lovely atmosphere and you will feel like you have romance in your life every evening and be HAPPY!
The glow and flickering light is so comforting.
We have our fair share of Targets and Walmarts around here. Love the gull photos and the sunset is just a WOW. Gorgeous colors and sky. Beautiful post and photos. Have a great weekend.
Nice sunsets you have, excellent.
Hi there - the gulls are great and I like the fact that the Christmas balls were "found" after the shot!
Cheers

Wow! Beautifully captured :)
Target is very nice, but I still miss Clover (now there's a Philly throwback!).
I can see why you'd pick that bench, a lovely view.
My 'walk-around' lens is a Canon 24-105L and it has a Circular Polarizer on it 99% of the time. IMO, that's the most useful filter. It was pretty expensive, but it works on my wide-angle zoom without vignette.
Personally, I think UV filters are a waste of money.
I also use a 4X Neutral Density to knock down exposure and I'll likely be purchasing a graduated Neutral Density for landscaped very soon.
Great shots of the gulls and the sun through the windshield.
We go to Maine every day - where in Maine did you take the pics
What beautiful photographs Reena, especailly the seagulls!
About the only filter I use is a circular polarizer, and usually only in the summer (when I remember to put it on!).
stunning photos as always. did you stop and explain the time limit to that gull? your camera finds beauty every where you go, so you should not have been surprised.
I knew your captures of Maine would not disappoint, Reena. So beautiful. :)
I think we need a housewarming weekend!;)
Wow, I can see why you chose to spend time there. It's absolutely gorgeous! I love the coast - any coast so I am looking forward to many more photos from this place. I almost always use a polarizing filter outdoors, but really want to try a gradient ND filter on sunsets sometime.
The colors are just breathtaking! Enjoy, enjoy and keep taking beautiful pics :)
Have a great weekend!
That second photo is beautiful - so rich in color. I only have a polarizing filter and use it mostly if I am going for a black and white image.
Great shots, Reena, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE that 2nd shot! The light shining on that side of the water on the trees (birches?) & that sky is sooo beautiful! =)
My dad was just talking yesterday about the sun setting sooo early & how it always makes him feel exhausted until Dec 21 when the days start getting longer, again, & he starts feeling better. =)
Wow! Such a wonderful spot where having a break whenever you need it!
gorgeous skies, reena, really superb shots!
i'm thinking i need this kind of view after this rather trying week.
happy weekend!
Ah, man, those pics of the sun setting are tremendous, reena. Amazing post as usual. Cheers!!
What wonderful views of the sunset. I love the colours and cloud textures.
Love all the images with the sunset being my favorite ones. I can see why you moved there because its so beautiful and has so much nature, which gives you so much to pick from when taking pictures. I'm sure your very happy living there and that your truly home! Richard
I love the one of the gull duet!
Glorious Reena. So happy for you finding your spot in Maine. Wishing you everything wonderful, Margie
Awesome set of images, well done Reena!!
Reena, you could just do bird shots and I'd still be one of your fans!! But your other shots are just as stunning, so you can keep doing those too! :-)
I hope you've had a good day!!
Great shots. I love seeing the water birds. I commend you on your very clean car windows. You must not ride with children or dogs : )
Reena, these are such beautiful shots!
I don't use a filter. And your Maine photos are gorgeous. Yes, 4 PM is too early for a sunset. Ours is about 4:40 pm right now. Yours is 45 minutes earlier up there.
Where ya hanging in the state? Sights like these are endless around here.
wow those yellows in the sky..and love the gulls...
These are simple beauties.
Only good eyes can see.
So happy for you
up on windy wintery coast!
My heart sings a little louder
as I think of you there
in all this beauty:)
-Jennifer
Well, you surely have a reason to dream in Maine - so many beautiful places out there! And especially the parking guy - haha - I wonder how much time he needs for a nap. Awesome weather, keep the photos coming!
Such gorgeous winter light. Especially love the image of the 2 gulls squawking. Beautiful - all of it!
Gorgeous shots and beautiful color - I'd love to visit Maine!
Beautiful shots.
Your landscapes, seascapes and birds are so wonderful! (as for the filter...I used a "skylight"(?) filter as protection for my lenses but now I have a new camera and they are still naked. I did buy a polarizing filter as part of a course I took; I'm never quite certain how to use it.
Awesome shots!
Your gull shots are awesome! That sunset is exquisite! Wowza!
i think that bird is the parking cop :)
