Slip sliding away ...

Sometimes a reward is worth the risk!

Even to Dotti Dove who grows weary
eating remnants from the ground that are tossed aside
by the greedy Downeys and Chickadees and Red-bellies.
She decides to take action!

If I carefully fly over there and balance myself, I believe I can reach that feeder.

 Made it!

And look at all that seed!  Oh my goodness!

This is such a better way to eat.  No grass pieces.

 Whoops ...

 Don't panic, don't panic ...

Just regain your balance girl ...

I can do this, I can do this ...

Just gotta refocus ...

Ohhhhhh noooooo, focus smocus, I'm slipping ....

Maybe this wasn't a good idea after all!

 Whew!  That was close!

Donald Dove plays it safe.
He just waits for the House Lady
to bring him food.

Stay cool my friends.
Temps will be reaching a 100 degrees in our neck of the woods!

Trained by a chipmunk

The weather has been a bit dreary lately.  Lots of rain and clouds.
I guess I shouldn't complain though.  It could be snow.
Or tornadoes!
So sad about the storms in Kansas
Tornadoes in February in Kansas!
Just wrong!

But enough of that dreariness.

: : :

The other day (a sunny day) I noticed Carmen Chipmunk waiting by the food dish.
I had not yet put the morning food out.

"Hey House Lady!  Where's my morning meal?"

"What the heck is the delay?"

"If you don't hurry up and get my food out here,
the squirrels will soon arrive."

"And then I'll get NONE!"

"OH, PLEASE, House Lady ... please hurry up!"

: : :

Well, of course, I immediately laced the wall with some sunflower seeds.
She has me well trained!

Here's hoping for some sunshine today wherever you are!

Critter complaints ...

Rocky Squirrel:  Hey, House Lady, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!!!???

Me:  Whoa ... squirrel, what is all the yellin' about?

Ricky Squirrel:  You want to know what all the yellin' is about?  Some other YOCAL has been feeding us, or rather, FORGETTING to feed us!

Rocky Squirrel:  Yeh, that's right.  We've been having to find other food.

Rocky Squirrel:  Do you have any idea how hard these walnut shells are.

Rocky Squirrel:  I almost broke two teeth getting through this thing!

Me:  Doesn't seem that chipmunk has any complaints.  Do you chipmunk?

Carmen Chipmunk:  murrmrmrurrmrmru ....

Me:  Didn't quite get that chipmunk.  What's that you said?

Carmen Chipmunk:  murmrurmrmrurmrmru!!!!!!

Me:  Sorry chipmunk, but ... you need to empty your mouth when speaking.

Carmen Chipmunk:  Ok, is this better?  I said .... Unlike those squirrels, I'm storing my food instead of EATING like those buffoons!  So while we may have not been treated daily, my rations served me quite well.  But I could use some more sunflower seed.  I'm just not that fond of the corn.

Me:  Well, chipmunk, I'll make sure there is more sunflower seeds in your future.  And as for you squirrels, I'll have a talk with that 'yocal' you have so affectionately identified.  I'm sure it wasn't as bad as you are all making it out to be.

Roxy Squirrel:  Oh, House Lady, those boys ... how they exaggerate!  You and I both know that there are acorns galore all around us.  So don't worry about those boys.  They've gotten a bit fat and spoiled.  It's good for them to go hunting and get a bit of exercise.

Me:  Well, thank you squirrel, that makes me feel a bit better.  It looks like it might be a rough winter though, so you might advise them to start storing up!  Between you and me though, I'll be here just in case.

Roxy Squirrel:  Thank you House Lady.  We do appreciate you, no matter what those boys say!

Me:  Best I don't know squirrel ....

Roxy Squirrel:  Understood ....

: : :

I always have fun doing these little made up chats with my critters.

I'm loving my little chipmunk lately.  It seems I have only one but who knows!  He's so funny since I've been putting out the sunflower seed on the stone wall.  He's out there every morning around 8am checking it out if there is anything there yet.  Once I do put it out, it only takes him about 5 minutes and three trips to gather up the handful I've placed there.  Then he spends the whole day coming back and checking.  Sometimes he just sits on the edge looking towards the house.

Such a hard working little guy.  Wish I had one-tenth of his energy!

Fall is fleeting by so quickly.
I'm always amazed at these last few blooms that my Clematis produces.
Refusing to accept the inevitable.

So, what are your thoughts?
Do you think we are in for a rough winter?

Plumpity plump ...

Pope Cardinal:  Hey House Lady, have you taken a look at some of my feathered friends lately?  I think they're overeating.  They're looking a bit plump, if you ask me.

Jack Sparrow:  Hey, who you calling plump?

Fabio Finch:  Yeh, anyway ... and who asked you?

Harry Woodpecker:  You need to mind your own business, Cardinal.

Fred Finch:  Besides, not all of us have your genes, Cardinal!  So keep your trap shut!

Johnny Sparrow:  Yeh, shutup Cardinal or the House Lady will stop filling the feeders regularly!

Tommy Titmouse:  You wouldn't do that would you House Lady?

Me:  Well, all of you are looking a bit plump.  But maybe that's cause winter is coming and you need a bit of fat on those little bones.

Pope Cardinal:  I'm telling you, House Lady ... all they do all day long is sit on those feeders and munch away.  NO exercise, no bug hunting, just eatin' nuts and seeds.   Just sayin' .....

Me:  I'll take it under advisement, Cardinal.  Now, if you will excuse me, I think I'll just put this ice cream back.  No need for all of us to plump up through the winter!

: : :

Hope your week gets off to a plumping good start, my friends.

Until tomorrow,

Patience ...

Harry Heron:  Are you coming?  I'm not going to wait all day for you!

Herman Heron:  Hold your flappin' beak.  This flying stuff is still new to me.  I barely made this landing as it was!

Herman Heron:  Ok, I'm ready now.  So I lean forward ...

... shove off and flap.  Right?

Herman Heron:  Hey!  Look at me!  I did it!

Harry Heron:  Oh my ... It's going to be a long long day.  And we haven't even discussed pole landing yet.

: : :

Hope your day got off to a great start!

I've been trying to learn to use Gimp to create
myself a watermark.
It's going rather slowly.
~sigh~
Thank goodness for You Tube video instructions!

Later, friends,

Critterquake

By now, you probably heard about the 5.9 earthquake that hit in Virginia and was felt all the way up the East coast.  I was sitting in my home office, as usual, thinking about what to blog  today, when the whole room started shaking.

All was okay, but I think my outdoor friends were a bit shaken up!

Ned Nuthatch:  Whoaaaaa .... what's happening!

John Sparrow:  I... I.... I ...... dunnknow......

Pope Cardinal Jr.:  This thing is swayin'!

Sally Starling:  I can barely hang on!

Red-bellied Woodpecker:  Hold on tight everybody!

Ned Nuthatch:  I think it's over everyone!

Pope Cardinal Jr the 2nd:  Well, that was a real feather ruffler!

Harriet Hairy Woodpecker:  Are you sure it's okay to let go?

Harry Hairy Woodpecker:  Honey, you best hang on a bit more!

Charlie Chickadee:  That's right Harry.  May be another one coming, whatever it was!

Hilly Hummingbird:  I barely felt anything you guys.  What are you all talking about?

Fabio Finch & Fabio Jr:  Hey, you guys on the ground!  Everything okay down there?

Mrs. Pope Cardinal:  Oh my, oh my ... I thought it would never end!

Darth Vader Squirrel:  I'm staying right here for a while!

Roxanne Mama Squirrel:  Vader Squirrel, get your lazy self up.  There's no time to lay around.  We've got little ones at home to care for!

Groundhog Chuck:  Well, I think, I think, I think, I'll just sleep
above ground tonight ya'll!

As usual, I didn't have to worry about what to post today.
These guys came to my rescue!

Until next time,
