Last week when I was pulling weeds in the late afternoon, I came across this little fellow.
It was apparent he had left his nest too soon.
And I couldn't find it.
And I couldn't find it.
I probably would have totally overlooked him if it hadn't been for his parents making such a ruckus.
The mama/papa Tree Sparrow was up on the roof with food for their little one.
I watched the little guy for a while as he finally was able to flutter up into a low shrub.
The parents came down frequently, landing and taking off.
At one point, they brought him some food and I was able to capture the feeding.
Still caring for him, forever parents.
When I checked later as it was growing dark, I found the little guy out in the middle of the yard,
still chirping for his parents who were beside themselves, swooping in and out.

I imagined it was their attempts to teach him to fly.
But he just didn't have the strength.
He kept heading towards the road so I slowly shooed him back
towards the house until he was back in the shrubs.

It was going to be a long night for him.
Life can be so precarious and unfair at times.

so sad and so true
...I hate that helpless
feeling of only being able
to watch.
(my wildlife rehab hubby says
leave the songbirds alone when
that happens. SO hard)
~sighing with you.

(awesome photos)
Nice shots :) LG Tina
These scenes always break my heart. That circle of life mess....
The photos are beautiful and very touching. It's very sad.
Bless his heart!

Oh, I do hope he makes it! My heart just breaks for little creatures like him. Great close-ups!
it's the mamma in all of us, it tugs at our heart strings!!!
these are wonderful pictures, i love watching birds feed their young!!!
where have you been all my "blogging life"!!! i love it here!!!
Oh, I hope he made it! But don't tell me if he didn't. I'd rather pretend he did. Great captures!
Oh, poor little guy! I do hate it when something like this happens! And, yes, I guess it is the mama in all of us when things like this tug at our heart! Such touching captures! Thank you for all you did!

umm, as someone who works at a wildlife rehabilitation center, that bird is a fledgling and is supposed to be on the ground. the parents care for them there. a lot of people see fledglings on the ground and bring them in because they think the parents just left them there, when in fact they are taking them from their parents. you have nothing to worry about, he's almost completely grown :)
poor little one. i hope he continues to be fed and can gain some strength.
Oh Mr. Anonymous person .... I am so glad to hear that!!!! Thank you so much for dropping in!!!
Woot! Woot! or should it be Chirp! Chirp!
Wonderful pictures but so sad, I really hope he makes it...
Amazing photos! I just read the anon comment above and can now just say fabulous shots, instead of feeling terribly sad about this fellow's plight. We have fledglings who nested in the tree out front and they are now huge but still wander around on the ground close to the nest, waiting for Mom to feed them.
Oh you really did capture the sweetest images here! So glad I read the comment from Anon. You are so lucky to get to see this little bird family's goings-on! ~Lili
I hope he survived. Yes, it's best to let them alone. Their parents know best. At least he had feathers so he was probably on the verge of flying off anyway!
Aw - poor little thing! I hope he makes it!
Oh gosh, this is so sad Reena. I sure hope he was able to survive.
Poor little guy!
Reena...I cannot believe I am still up and playing on the computer, but am so glad I am. This post is precious. I know your heart was breaking and frantic when you found that baby. Your photos are absolutely wonderful. I felt like I was you right there on the spot they were captured so well. You have made my night. Genie
Wow that was so fast of you to take those moments of feeding. How so wonderful moments to have captured them. Thanks
That is so sad... I hope nothing bothers the
little guy and he can continue to be fed until
he has enough strength to fly
Awwww... poor little guy, we have had this happen in our yard with robins. I'm sure the parents kept a close watch on him, perhaps he has learned to fly by now...
How heart wrenching - the cycle of life!! Thank you for catching a moment in time and sharing it.
good pictures, for the fragility of life
Awwww......poor thing.

This is an amazing telling and photo documentation. I'm plugging for him.
When I pulled into my spot in the parking ramp at work the other day, there was a bird (adult) just sitting, and he didn't fly away. I walked up to him, nudged him with my finger, and he didn't move. I wondered what was amiss, and I didn't have time to investigate any more.
His parents knew where he was all the time. I would think they did. I see them around here but not the same species. Mine are larger birds like grackles and sometimes even starlings. I seldom see smaller ones unless it is a sparrow being fed by a parent.
Lovely photos ~ I hope he manages to survive!
This poor little guy. He looks so helpless..and - yest - so sweet!
Unfair without his GPS, for sure.
Great post and photos! The adults will continue to feed it until it gains strength to fly. Kudos to you for not picking the bird up.

LOL what a cute little booger!
I so hate to find little birds in this position, as I realize there are hungry predators around, first off our cat! Wonderful captures of this little guy/gal. Hope you were the only one that "captured" it!
Looking forward to more of your photo adventures as a new follower:)
Poor little sweetie pie, we see that here too.
testing...
Oh this breaks my heart! If you have an update you must tell us!
Awww what a precious lil one & I sure hope flying comes soon. =)
How terribly sad. I hope he somehow finds his way back to the nest.
This is so heartbreaking, I hope somehow he makes it.
Oh what a cute little bird... I hope it makes it.
Lovely images and a great read.
Always heartbreaking when these little ones lose their way.
Oh my goodness. Its parents have the work cut out for them for a few days!
Isn't that the truth! Poor little guy. We had the same thing happen last summer in our garden...our little guy, a am afraid, did not make it :(
Great photos! Poor little guy, so very precious!
Wonderful capture...
What an amazing series of photos! I certainly hope he survives . . .
Lovely photos. I hope the little fellow survived.
I'm late getting here and am hoping that this little fella is okay....
Wonderful documentation of this little bird's plight. Hope he was able to make his way to a safe place for the night.
I kept hoping by the time I got to the end of the post you would have some awesome news that he made it back to the nest. I know it's nature but still makes me sad. Any news on the little fellow yet?
